In an election season that gripped the nation and the world, former President Donald Trump has reclaimed the White House, not only securing a decisive Electoral College win but also, potentially and remarkably, the popular vote, something we haven’t seen in over 20 years since President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004. This dual victory in the Electoral College and potentially the popular vote may signal a shift, suggesting a mandate from the American people, a call for significant action on key issues at home and abroad.

A Historic Win and What It Represents The uniqueness of Trump’s dual victory cannot be understated

While elections often hinge on the Electoral College alone, winning the popular vote suggests a broader acceptance of his vision, with significant implications for both domestic and foreign policy. Regardless of party lines, Trump’s broad appeal across different regions and demographics points to key areas where Americans expect meaningful change, notably in terms of economic challenges like inflation, foreign relations, immigration, and border security.

One of the defining issues of Trump’s campaign and, indeed, his prior administration was immigration reform. For decades, this has been a topic with deep-seated political divides. The constant fluctuation of immigration policy with each administration often directed through executive orders—has left U.S. border security and immigration laws inconsistent and, at times, inefficient. Given the extent of his victory, Trump’s administration now has an opportunity, perhaps even a responsibility, to make real and lasting changes to immigration policy, notably through working with Congress. Suppose Republicans also managed to secure control of the House and Senate. In that case, it creates a historic opportunity for the administration and Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform through Congress, establishing clear, enforceable rules that will endure beyond a single administration [not forgetting the filibuster as a possible tool Democrats could still use to ensure their vision is also expressed in any bill]. This would represent a significant departure from the past cyclical policy changes we have seen.

Why Congressional Action Is Crucial for Real Reform

Since the 1990s, each administration has approached immigration dramatically differently, often relying on executive orders (EOs) that may be reversed or altered with each new president. This pattern has left immigration policy unstable, constantly shifting with each administration’s perspective. By pursuing a legislative solution, Trump would address a decades-long challenge: ensuring immigration reform is codified in law, creating stability and clarity for all stakeholders. With Congress-backed immigration established policy, the southern border issue would be more effectively addressed and send a signal of bipartisan stability on a contentious issue. Namely, I believe a robust, enduring immigration policy needs to transcend partisanship to serve the country’s best interests, supporting security, humanitarian concerns, and economic growth.

Why Now Is the Time to Act

I would argue given the current state of immigration and border issues; Trump has the opportunity to work with Congress to address these in a comprehensive way. This isn’t about partisanship but about acknowledging a system that could be more effective and humane if clear, stable, and enforceable. A permanent legislative solution would ensure that border security and immigration management are consistent and fair, ending the reliance on temporary executive orders, as mentioned earlier in this post.

Regardless of who supported or opposed Trump’s return to the White House, the results of this election represent a voice from across the country. One could argue that this election was more than a win; it was a call for action on defining issues that affect Americans every day. Now is the time for President Trump and Congress to work together, setting aside political divides to create policies that benefit the nation as a whole. As we look to the next four years, Americans deserve to see lasting, effective solutions, not temporary measures.
